Half Letter Press

We’re excited (and ecstatic) to embark on our first of two free events that we are hosting at the Beyond The Paint: Philadelphia’s Mural Arts exhibition in Philadelphia!
Join Salem from Temporary Services on Sunday, February 23, 2014 as she welcomes the Philadelphia group We The Weeds to the Self-Reliance Library. The event happens from 2-4 pm.
We The Weeds is preparing a generous presentation about their work as well as an interactive workshop on identifying sticks - the skeletal parts of plants that stay with us through the long winter.
Admission to PAFA is free every Sunday during the exhibition. Join us a little early and take a walk around the exhibit. Visitors to the Self-Reliance Library can pick up a free copy of our Self-Reliance Library booklet (2nd edition, made in conjunction with this exhibition), as well as a free special pencil while supplies last.
Save the date! Our next SRL event at the show will be on Sunday, March 23, 2014 with the good folks of the Prometheus Radio Project. Hope to see our Philadelphia-area friends at both events!

NEW IN STOCK! Dining in Refugee Camps: The Art of Sahrawi Cooking, by Robin Kahn
A full-color, bilingual, collage journal that documents Robin Kahn’s month cooking with women of the Western Sahara. As a guest artist selected to participate in ARTifariti 2009, Kahn stayed with Sahrawi families living in refugee camps in Algeria and in the desert of The Free Territories of the Western Sahara. There she created the collages for this publication by combining the sparse materials available locally with photos, recipes, histories and drawings. The result is a 50-page full-color journal that examines the art of Sahrawi food production: how kitchens are improvised, food is procured and prepared, and traditional recipes are innovated from UN rations and international aid. The book is a testament to the daily struggles of Sahrawi women whose role is to provide sustenance, fortitude and comfort inside a compromised society.
